Most crime happens at night, so a camera that only works in daylight isn't much protection.
Infrared (IR) night vision
Most cameras use infrared LEDs to see in the dark. The result is black-and-white footage. The advertised range (e.g. '20m IR') tells you how far the camera can illuminate — but treat these as optimistic.
Colour night vision
Some cameras use a built-in spotlight or a larger sensor to produce colour footage at night. This is useful for identifying colours of clothing or vehicles.
What to check
- The IR/colour range is enough for your space.
- Light sources like streetlights don't blind the camera.
- The camera is rated for outdoor use if installed outside.
